Gunner Windsurfing
Canary Islands 2014
Maj Jed Cunningham
In the first 10 days of March 12 Gunners from 1RHA, 12, 19 and 47 Regt jetted off to Lanzarote in the Canaries to learn to windsurf or improve under the tutelage of the 47 Regt Welfare Officer, Maj Cunningham and BC Chestnuts, Maj Greenfield. On arrival in the town of Costa Teguise the group settled into their self catering accommodation and after a bit of shopping realised it was just as cheap to eat out than cook it yourself. Suffice to say a few nights out ensued.

Because there was such a wide range of windsurfing skills, most of which novice, an onshore lesson on 'Start Windsurfing' was delivered to all before lunch on the first day with a safety boat on the water all personnel went out into Playa La Cucharas bay in a cross-shore 10 - 25 knot wind that some used more than others; Gnr Hemming (47) built a strong relationship with the safety boat throughout the week. Later that evening it was 'La Carnival'; a carnival that comes to Costa Teguise once a year. A selection of fancy dress was donned the group joined the thousands of locals celebrating.

Ex ATLANTIC SURF - 25 Kts of Wind
On the days where the wind was to strong to windsurf the surf boards came out with waves of over 2 metres to play in. No moment was lost in the quest for adventure on this idyllic island. On the light wind day the group moved from the central part of Playa La Cucharas Bay to the northern edge; armed with Stand Up Paddleboards (SUP), kayaks and snorkelling gear the group investigated the whole bay by paddling around the edges and diving below the surface to see the array of underwater wildlife that was there. In the afternoon the group went to San Bartolome to try out the world famous go-karting track where the world championships are held. It was then onto hired scooters to investigate the volcanoes around the Island; many less than 400 years.

Ex ATLANTIC SURF - Start Racing
After 7 days there was sufficient skills in the group to race and so a 3 day event comprising 13 races ensued. The winds were blowing cross onshore 8 - 12 knots on the first racing day; perfect conditions for novice racing. With all competitors armed with the skills learned so far, the race was on. The day consisted of 5 races after which LBdr Nowell (19)led the day with Bdr Scott (12) and Gnr Payne (12) fighting for 2nd place.
With the same conditions as the day before a further 5 races were raced around buoys at the extremity of the bay. It was great to see a group that could not sail back to the same place easily on day one all heading in the direction they chose and staying together as a group. The bay is about 500m across and with the course being up to 3 laps around it races were about 3 km in length. LBdr Nowell won the day again with Bdr Scott taking second and Gnr Davies (47) dislodging Gnr Payne for a podium position.

The 3rd day of racing and muscles are tiring; however, with only 6 points separating the top three it could go anyway. The wind was lighter than previous with a forecast to drop off completely by mid afternoon. A final 3 races took place that did not see a change in the positions and just after lunch LBdr Nowell was crowned the Royal Artillery Lanzarote Windsurfing Champion 2014 with Gnr Davies (47) and Bdr Scott (12) taking 2nd and third. The week included all elements of the Start Windsurfing Course and clinics from the intermediate course. As a result 6 soldiers gained their Start certificate and one attained the Intermediate Non-planing certificate.

Ex ATLANTIC SURF - Reprise
This was an absolutely amazing 10 days for all; sport, sun and great entertainment. Without the financial support from the Royal Artillery Yacht Club, RACPD, Army Sports Lottery and the regiments involved this would not have been possible. If any reader has an opportunity such as this - take it. Brilliant!
